I tried explaining the salicylic acid peel in a comment on your other question but it wouldn't allow me to write more than like 3 lines. It's pure salicylic acid with only 5 other ingredients, as opposed to most over the counter products which have tons of other additives in their ingredients, so it's pretty strong. It's a liquid that you put all over your face (and neck if needed) and let it sit for a while before rinsing it off. The first few times I used it it burned INCREDIBLY bad, as in like I had to wash it off after less than a minute. It's a professional strength product, so it burns intensely. Gradually you work your way up from using it only 1 minute to using as long as you want. I'm able to keep it on for about 15 minutes now. You should start off using it only once or twice a week then work your way up to using it more frequently. I use it almost every night for 15 minutes now after using it for 2 months. It does great for cystic acne, and great for red marks as well. Red marks aren't actually scars, they're still part of the pimple that's in the process of healing. They fade on their own eventually but it takes a while. The salicylic helps decrease the healing time. Lighter marks, as in small red marks or average sized pink marks will fade depending on how often you use it. Using it once or twice a week they may fade slower, but within a week or two you'll see very noticeable improvements. I used to have acne really bad, and still get the occasional pimple, so I have quite a few small red marks. After using this for 2 months, using it the way I described, older small/light marks have faded entirely and larger/darker marks are showing great improvement. I've noticed the marks fading tremendously recently by doing it almost every night and also using the Alpha Hydrox cream that I mentioned nightly. Your face may or may not break out a bit when you first start using, but it'll get better. Mine didn't break out, but reading other people's reviews, they say their's did. If you decide to use the salicylic, it's important to follow the directions. It's a professional strength product and if not used correctly, can damage your face, as you said. However, if you follow directions and be patient, working your way up, it should be fine. Salicylic acid is self neutralizing, meaning after 10 to 15 minutes, it stops working on it's own so you could actually leave it on all night without washing it off, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's by far the best product I've used for acne. As I said in my other answer, if your cystic acne is bad, you need to see a derm as he/she can give you antibiotics that kill the bacteria that causes acne, meaning no acne whatsoever. But if your acne isn't that bad, this product should work great. Gotta be patient though, it won't work overnight, though you may see small improvements each morning after using it. Also, to answer the current question, don't worry about your skin's color. Color changes in different lighting. In my bathroom I look tan but in my kitchen I look pale. Also, store lighting uses fluorescent lights, which are notorious for distorting skin. It makes every blemish come out even worse and often makes the skin look a color it isn't. In fluorescent lighting, my face looks pink like i'm blushing but it doesn't look that way anywhere else. The best way to see what color your skin really is and to see how bad/good your skin looks is to take a mirror outside in the sun. The sun is natural light, so it will show your natural skin tone. My face looks great at home, horrible in stores and classrooms (many classes use fluorescent as well, though not as brightly as in stores), and fairly average in natural light. It's normal to look a little red under fluorescent lights, especially if you have acne and red marks. It isn't rosacea. Your face will be like this for quite a while until everything (pimples, marks, etc.) is cleared up, and even still it will always look different in different lighting, everyone's does. Since you don't have flawless skin, however, it just looks even more different than most.
